We find hundreds of nameless women in the Bible. Each of their stories were recorded so that generations for eternity might learn from them.

Names are important to us, aren’t they? We like it when people call us by name. We try to call others by name. Since God knows each of us by name, we would expect Him to call everyone in the Bible by name. But He doesn’t. In fact, many of the times He merely refers to women as someone’s wife or mother or daughter. Other times He describes them by their town or their occupation or activity. Why is that?

We can’t begin to think like God, but it does seem there are times when He wanted us to know exactly who He was talking about. Other times, the story was more important than the individual. Most of the recipients of miracles were unnamed. The miracle was the point of the story. It could have happened to anyone. In some ways we can relate better to the nameless women because their stories could just as easily have been ours. They’re every woman.

In the stories of obscure, nameless Bible women we see the character of God shine forth. We see timeless stories of love and hate, good and evil, hope and despair. As we read and study their stories, we can learn from each of these women. Who is your favorite?
